I earned my undergraduate degree in teaching from the University of Northern Iowa.  Over the years, I have taught in both elementary and middle schools.  For the past 15 years, I have been teaching 7th grade language arts at Callanan Middle School in Des Moines.  I have a Master of Arts in teaching degree from Morningside College and, most recently, attended Drake University to work towards a Master of Science in School Counseling degree.  I am excited to begin my counseling career as a Capitol View Tiger!  Outside of school, my two daughters keep my husband and I very busy.  We enjoy boating, sports, cheering for the Cubs, reading, and playing with our dog, Wrigley.  I look forward to meeting you all!  Please let me know if I can help you with anything!

Class Description

Hi there! My name is Ashton Stafford, and I am a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who serves the students at Capitol View Elementary. I have been at Capitol View since the summer of 2011. I received my Bachelor's degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA and my Masters in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Northern Iowa. I use a combination of sign language and spoken English, depending on the student and their specific needs. I continue to build my own signing vocabulary and American Sign Language (ASL) skills, each and every day. A large part of my job is to provide as much visual support for the teachers and students as I can. My students work on a variety of skills during their speech sessions; sound production, articulation with visual phonics support, answering WH questions, story retell, proper grammar/syntax when writing and/or speaking, and social language. I love the challenges and rewards that my job provides, as well as being able to see my students grow as they move through preschool and elementary!  Feel free to contact me with any questions.
